Gumball toe stops have been the number one toe stop for roller derby skaters for a number of years. 2015 has brought some exciting new changes to a modern classic and the result is the all new Superball!

The Superball toe stop has a large surface area as recent market research has shown that this is what skaters of today were looking for - a wider base to offer more stability, the option to stop immediately and a way to 'glide' when skating backwards.

The Superball toe stop features the same ground breaking technology as we saw with the Reckless Morph wheels by utilising two different rubber hardnesses! The main surface of the Superball toe stop has been crafted with a harder rubber compound to allow for more gliding and the softer 'inner pads' are designed to bring you to an immediate stop.

If as a skater the weight of your skates is an issue, Antik have offset the weight of the extra material used in the surface of the Superball toe stop by incorporating a hollow stem without sacrificing on strength and as with all Gumball toe stops, they are available in a short (17mm) length and a longer (30mm) length and like with the Gumball V2 toe stops now feature different coloured stems on every one!

Gumball Superball Toe Stop review

In the new Superball toe stop you certainly get a lot of toe stop! I mean literally! These toe stops are BIG and have a whole lot of rubber with a surface area of 60mm and dual density compounds. Now 60mm doesn’t sound that big but in comparison to the original V1 Gumballs which had a surface area of 45mm, it’s immediately noticeable when you unbox them! With this in mind be prepared that they will look bigger and bulkier than their predecessor at first; however in terms of weight I didn't notice the extra rubber making them any heavier… the hollow stems seem to have worked well to save on any extra weight! The moment I started skating I forgot all about my concerns regarding the size of the Superballs! I felt comfortable straight away and was jumping around on them with lots of confidence. The great thing about their size is that they provide a lovely large landing surface area giving you a nice stable platform to land that apex jump on! This was something I found lacking with the original v1 Gumballs due to the rounded profile, where I would feel like I was rolling off the edges. Now before using the Superballs I was skating with the standard Crazy Venus plate toe stops which I found to lack bounce, however with the Superballs I think I’ve found an extra spring in my jump, I even had a number of comments from the girls at training saying I looked bouncier… this may have just been from me jumping around loads to fully try them but equally the rubber compound seems to have some welcomed shock absorption when landing. The only downside I’ve found so far is that you really need to have these toe stops fully tightened into your plate due to the shape of them, the rubber increases in depth from top to bottom. If they aren’t tight they will turn and can then end up at the wrong angle which did happen to me a couple of times in my first session. Of course this is an easy fix, just make sure they are done up tight! In terms of the wear of the rubber I haven’t been using them long enough to comment on this yet, but so far no problems. These are only my thoughts on them and obviously everyone will have their own preferences but in terms of my style of skating (Jammer who also blocks and is partial to jumping around on toe stops) I really like them so won’t be changing them any time soon!
